First Steps In Water Damage Cleanup

Within this article, you will learn the first steps that need to be taken for water damage clean-up.

You should immediately add two liters of chlorine bleach to any standing water within your home. You shouldn't occupy a home that still has contains standing water. When removing the water from your flooded home, you should do it slowly. Drain around a third of the total volume each day. In the event that the ground becomes saturated, and the water is being removed to quickly, it may cause the floor or walls to buckle.

You may also use pails or pumps in order to remove water that may be standing, followed by a dry/wet shop vacuum in order to mop up all of the rest. In order to receive instructions on how you can disinfect and restore cisterns and wells, you should contact your local authorities.

Don't heat your home until all of the water has been removed. In the event that you use kerosene, gasoline, or propane-powered heaters or pumps, you should purchase and install a carbon monoxide sensor. All these devices are capable of producing very large amounts of carbon monoxide that are lethal whenever they are out of tune or ventilated improperly.

Remove all dirty and soaked debris and materials. Break out the walls and remove wood paneling, drywall, and insulation at least twenty inches above the line of high-water. Remove residual soil and mud, appliances, furniture, bedding, and clothing. You should take the hose and spray down any remaining dirt that is sticking to the solid-wood furniture and walls. Then you will need to rinse several different times. Then you may wash and then wipe down each of the structures and surfaces with chlorine bleach being sure that there are adequate amounts of cross ventilation in order to remove the fumes. Then you should rinse again.

You should also wear a charcoal respirator whenever you are using bleach in a closed space. Wipe down each of the surfaces that haven't been directly affected by the flood by using a solution that are made up of one part bleach and four parts water, dishwashing detergent, and then rinse.

Within two days, the carpets have to be dried. For the large areas, you may want to consider hiring a professional to handle the job. Carpets that are soaked with sewage have to be discarded immediately.

Overall, these are the first steps that need to be taken as part of water damage clean-up. In the event that you are unable to do these things on your own, you may want to consider hiring some professional help so that you know everything is handled accordingly and with the proper safety measures.
